A look back at 2020 and what lies ahead Early in the pandemic, Ms. Jay* called one of our attorneys. Her daughter was in the hospital with COVID-19, and her grandson, William, needed his psychiatric medication right away. Anxious and unsure about how to navigate when everything was shut down, Ms. Jay remembered one thing: the name of her family's Children's Law Center lawyer. That one call made a world of difference. Our attorney secured William’s medication quickly and averted the crisis. I think about Ms. Jay often and how deep, trusting relationships make it possible for us to help children like William. Other calls came throughout the year – from parents, community partners, DC agency leaders, DC Councilmembers – each time asking our help to solve problems as they emerged. Inside our 2020 Annual Report you’ll read how our 25 years of experience prepared us to answer each call. We’ve always helped children and families weather the storms that roll in and out of their lives, but the pandemic was a massive storm that hit all of us at once. Thankfully, with your help, we were able to respond rapidly to solve problems child by child and family by family while also finding city-wide solutions. The entire Children’s Law Center family stepped up – donors who doubled and tripled their gifts and allies working together to tackle each challenge one-by-one. The pandemic widened already deep racial and economic inequities, and tens of thousands of young people stepped up and led our country in a decisive call for racial justice. I realize there is much work to be done, but it gives me hope seeing greater understanding of how racism and other systemic barriers hold so many children back. As we look ahead, I know many challenges will persist: learning loss, access to mental health supports, housing instability. They are problems we’ve solved for 25 years, and – with your partnership and support – we will continue solving every day.
