John,
Yesterday, the Texas GOP unscrupulously pushed HB1026 through the House, removing the role of a volunteer deputy registrar and putting the responsibility of registering voters in the hands of the Governor's appointed Secretary of State.
Texas Republicans aren't even trying to hide their motives anymore. They've made a straight-up power grab, and they don't care who is watching.
The GOP should be ashamed and even embarrassed. If passed, this bill will result in legal voters having their applications denied. And once denied, Texans will have to travel to Austin to prove to the Secretary of State that they are, in fact, eligible to vote. This creates ethical dilemmas and an administrative nightmare at great expense to the taxpayers.
House Bill 1026 is flat-out moronic.
But it hasn't been signed into law quite yet. We still have a short window of time to act. That's why Fair and Square is deploying a team to register as many voters as possible before they take away our right to do so.

Next, Texas Republicans plan to pass legislation that would allow them to deploy an army of conservative poll watchers in "diverse neighborhoods" to "prevent voter fraud" from happening at the ballot boxes -- a not so subtle attempt to suppress Brown and Black votes.
It's no secret Republicans are fighting dirty because when demographics change in Texas, they know that they can't win the fair and square way.
Concerned for our future,
Team Fair and Square Texas
