Karyn Polito More than Doubles Charlie Baker’s ‘Anemic’ Fundraising
Karyn Polito More than Doubles Charlie Baker’s ‘Anemic’ Fundraising

According to March fundraising numbers, Charlie Baker’s campaign cash is lagging behind Democratic and Republican challengers, including his own Lieutenant Governor.
  • March fundraising numbers are in, and Charlie Baker reported raising an ‘anemic’ $25k--as the Democratic Governors Association called it--falling behind both Democratic and Republican contenders, including Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito.
  • Baker’s facing tough criticism from state and federal Democrats over his botched vaccine rollout. While he hasn’t said whether he’ll run for a third term, Polito seems to be gearing up for her own run, raising over twice Baker’s haul with $2 million in the bank.
  • Polito has largely stayed out of the spotlight, hoping Massachusetts forgets about her record as state representative:
    • The Polito Patronage Pipeline is infamous. In 2010, the Globe found that 68 of 100 vanity charity license plates went to people with connections to Polito. It’s an issue that’s followed her as Lieutenant Governor, this time with high-salary court positions.
    • Polito led the charge against gay marriage and trans rights in the State House and sponsored a controversial bill requiring abortion providers to provide patients with anti-choice information and materials.
  • No matter who the GOP nominates in 2022, it’s time for a change of leadership in the corner office. Massachusetts deserves a governor who will work towards a more just and equitable future for all people.

Charlie Baker Raised Anemic $25K in March As His Approvals Sink and Criticism of Botched Vaccine Rollout Continues

Under fire for a botched vaccine rollout and facing sinking approval ratings, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker posted pitiful fundraising numbers – especially for someone who’s been hinting at a run for a third term.

Baker only raised $25,457 in March 2021, and has been getting outraised by other Republicans, including his own lieutenant governor. Not a good sign considering Politico reported recently Baker’s “standing within his own party is so strained that” he might get a primary challenger backed by GOP leadership next year.

This is the latest in a string of bad news for Baker – with his sinking popularity and weeks of failing to stand up a statewide vaccination program, Baker has dropped like a lead balloon and his chances of re-election are going down with him. His approval rating has dropped by 26 points, and members of his own party only gave him a 38% approval rating.

Baker’s sinking approvals could hurt his chances in upcoming elections, and could send other Massachusetts Republicans crashing down with him. Democratic candidates and potential Democratic candidates have been easily outraising Baker – indicating Massachusetts might be ready for a change.

“Charlie Baker’s dismal fundraising haul comes as his approval ratings continue to tumble and his administration deals with the fallout over his botched vaccine rollout. There’s no way around it, Baker is increasingly vulnerable should he choose to run for office in 2022,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Sam Newton. “Given that potential Democratic candidates are outraising Baker and other top Republicans, Massachusetts could be ready for a change in leadership next year.”
