Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s Broadband Justice Act would expand Internet access to
8 million households. Access to the Internet is an essential part of our
lives in the 21st century. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that to an
even greater extent.

Many people in every part of the country, in every type of place — rural,
suburban, and urban — have struggled to do things virtually just because
the cost of Internet was too much. While corporate PACs are donating to
lawmakers and cable companies get massive tax breaks, regular people are
left with bigger and bigger bills for the essentials they need to keep
going. These days, the majority of us need the Internet to attend school,
see family members, and do our jobs. Cost shouldn’t be a barrier to
getting online.

In a country with so many injustices and intersecting crises, barriers to
Internet access can sometimes wind up not getting enough media coverage.
We’re all fighting for Medicare for All, racial justice, housing justice,
a Green New Deal, strong labor protections, canceling student loan debt,
and so much more. We must take on each piece of inequality in this country
in order to achieve justice — that includes broadband justice.
