John,
Last week, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp put his knee on the neck of Georgia
voters by signing S.B. 202, a law designed to restrict voting
rights. It imposes draconian Jim Crow 2.0 measures — including
making it a crime to hand out food or water to people waiting in
line for hours to vote and allowing GOP political hacks to take
over local control of Elections Boards when they don’t like the
outcome.
This is a huge threat aimed directly at large Democratic
strongholds such as DeKalb and Fulton counties, exactly what
Trump was trying to do in the Presidential election and January
Senate run-offs. Kemp and his legislative minions have codified
the ability to overturn the will of Georgia voters.
Signing this heinous law behind closed doors, Gov. Kemp was
actually throwing a victory party complete with six good ol’ boys
and an outsized painting of a Georgia slave plantation just as
Georgia Representative, Park Cannon was knocking on his door —
still fighting for her constituents’ rights to vote.
In
response to her knocking on a door, Georgia State Troopers hauled
her off in handcuffs to the Fulton County jail charging her with
two felonies. What a throwback to the dark past when Black people
didn’t have rights in this country and couldn’t even step inside
the Georgia State Capitol. Now you can go in, even be a duly
elected official, but you get arrested for knocking on a door.
What a contrast with the treatment of the Trump mob who violently
stormed the U.S. Capitol and walked away.
Republicans are intent on rolling back voting rights and making
it as hard as possible for people to vote. They know that they
can’t win elections fair-and-square, and Donald Trump has
inspired them to ignore democracy and simply grab power wherever
they can.
John — I pledge to keep fighting to pass
the For the People Act, a federal law that protects voting rights
across the country, in every state! If you’re able, please join
the fight by pitching in a donation today.
