The Grievance Process Advocates will be providing two trainings coming up on Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 20th for TCDSA members, with priority given to prospective Grievance Committee members and those in chapter leadership. Did you know that freelancers and authors have a union?
Yes, it’s true. For decades, a nationwide union chapter, UAW Local 1981, has existed under its alternate name of the National Writers Union or NWU. This union fights for free speech, net neutrality, fair contracts between freelance writers and publishers, and other issues of interest to writers of all kinds. They also provide contract negotiation or drafting assistance and an optional health plan. The Twin Cities has had a local branch of the chapter, but it has been semi-dormant in recent years.

An NWU member named Robbie Orr is seeking to revive the branch by holding a meetup on October 16th, at Gandhi Mahal restaurant community room, at 6:30 pm. He's invited DSA members and has sent us a brief statement with more detail. (Read more... ([link removed]) )

Line 3 Update: One in the Win Column, and Upping Our Game Up North
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency conceded to public pressure last week and denied Enbridge a water quality permit it needs to build the new Line 3 pipeline. This is a significant victory for water protectors, but not the end of the line. Enbridge is not going to stop pre-construction on this project and intends to build come hell or high water. In mid-October Twin Cities DSA will be joining a march into the heart of the beast, delivering the message to Enbridge’s doorstep: This pipeline will not be built! (Read more... ([link removed]) )

Brexit - could it really just be all about the taxes?
I’ll bet you’re confused as heck about Brexit. Don’t worry, so are most average Brits. It’s deliberately designed to be confusing, because, apparently, it’s all just a massive con game to the powerful interests who are really in charge. That’s what I have come to believe in the past month or so of obsessively reading everything I can get my hands on about Brexit. The narrative that finally began to resolve into a sensible explanation, even though on its face, it’s a paranoid fantasy, is that Brexit was designed from the very start to be chapter three in the staggering acceleration of the wealth gap between working class and (those who consider themselves) ruling class. New Working Group in TCDSA to address mental health
On Saturday, September 14, a group of five Twin Cities DSA members - Jordan and Arissa, Ezra I, Jessica N, and I (Debs) - met at a Saint Paul coffee shop to launch a new working group focusing on mental health. You may ask - is that mental health in policy and theory, mental health as a diversity point in socialist culture, or our own individual mental health as a factor in our lives and overall health? Is our group going to be working on destroying stigmas about mentally ill people, or on ensuring mental health coverage stays in Medicare4All, or are we going to be a mutual aid and support group for anyone struggling with a mental health issue?
