That's Chip Roy, Republican congressman from Texas, in a congressional hearing about anti-Asian violence, making light of Texas's abhorrent history of lynchings of people of color.
It gets worse. Rep. Roy also took the opportunity (again, at a hearing *about anti-Asian violence*) to complain that he, a white member of Congress, was the real victim, and those who criticize him were akin to the Chinese Communist Party: "When we start policing free speech we're doing the very thing that we're condemning when we condemn what the Chinese Community Party does to their country."
Unreal. Not only did Chip Roy fail to show leadership in a time of escalating anti-Asian violence, but he repeatedly used his speaking time during the anti-Asian violence hearing to attack the Chinese Communist Party, deliberately mixing the two issues to the immense joy of his white nationalist base.
Well let me tell you, unlike the congressman, we're not interested in pandering to an arch-conservative base with allusions to lynching or validations of their misplaced feelings of victimization. We're interested in showing Chip Roy the door.
But as we've seen for the past four years, hard-right conservatives like Chip Roy have powerful special interests and dark money donors propping them up. For a small resistance like ours to take on the Koch Brothers' chosen candidates, we need all the ammunition we can get. And currently, we're $417 short of our March 27 goal -- but we're not giving up hope.
