Dear John,

This school year has been the most challenging of our times, for students, teachers, parents, administrators and staff.

All of our kids and families have suffered — from isolation and trauma, from disrupted learning and erratic schedules, from the loss of feeling safe or of any pittance of "work/life balance."

But of course not all have suffered equally. Students with disabilities, students living in shelters, students who lacked access to technology, and younger students have faced even more challenges with remote learning. Low-income, predominantly Black and brown students have been more likely to face personal loss. For too many of our students, the stresses of this pandemic year could follow them throughout their education and their lives.

So as we move into spring, and begin to plan for summer and fall, we have both the responsibility and the opportunity to reopen our schools safely, supportively, and more justly — in ways that help all kids become more resilient and able to thrive in the days and years to come.

Join me and health and education experts for a conversation about what our schools need for a safe and supportive return. [[link removed]]

The conversation about schools has become extremely fraught over the last year — with teachers, parents, and students pushed to breaking points, pitted against each other, and struggling through impossibly challenging conditions.

We urgently need to restore a sense of solidarity and resilience, to help teachers, students, families, and communities thrive together — and that means honest conversations about some hard issues and advocacy for the resources schools need to implement thoughtful reopening plans.

RSVP to join us next Thursday evening for this important conversation. [[link removed]] We'll be joined by epidemiologist Dr. Celine Gounder, educators Shael Polakow-Suransky and José Luis Vilson, and integration activist and student Emma Rehac.

We'll talk about what's needed for students, teachers, staff, and families to feel safe, to get the support they need to thrive, and to build a more just and nourishing school system for all of our kids out of this pandemic.

Brad

P.S. Thank you to those of you who signed our petition to the Mayor to replace the arbitrary two-case threshold with a test-and-trace approach that keeps healthy classrooms open and invests in more testing for a safe return to school. Over 1,300 people have signed and the momentum for this change continues to grow. Please sign and share if you haven't already. [[link removed]]
