Friend,

My name is Ana Ramirez and I have been on a hunger strike for the past eight days with the Coalition for Excluded Workers1.

It’s very hard to go a whole week without food but as excluded workers we’ve had a lot of practice with hunger this past year.

Before the pandemic, I worked in a restaurant. It’s been over a year of being out of work. I don’t qualify for unemployment, or federal stimulus. Without money coming in, I’ve relied on food pantries and what my community could gather ourselves to survive.

I’m not alone. More than 500,000 people in New York State have been excluded from benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mutual aid funds like NYCOFI’s COVID-19 Relief Fund help us survive. If you received a stimulus payment and have your needs met, can you make a gift to the Fund?

I will keep going with this fight until excluded workers are treated with the dignity we deserve.

Until we win,
Ana Ramirez
