If we’ve learned anything in the last few weeks, it’s that our majority in the Senate has an extremely thin margin. Had we lost even a single Democratic vote last week, we would not have been able to pass the American Rescue Plan and provide relief to the millions of families struggling through this pandemic.

A one-vote margin is just too close for comfort. And if Democrats lose even a single Senate seat in 2022, the GOP may regain control and go back to sending important bills to legislative purgatory.

Conventional wisdom may hold that Illinois is a blue state that will likely remain Democratic in 2022. But Illinois had a Republican Senator until 2016 and a Republican governor until 2018. And Virginians know better than anyone how quickly the votes within a state can shift.

We need to take this race seriously, or risk losing Tammy’s seat.

It’s been a great honor to serve with Tammy in the U.S. Senate. She’s a combat veteran who has spent her years in Congress advocating for troops, Veterans, and military families.

She also broke barriers as the first Senator to give birth while service in office. She even advocated for an historic rule change so she could bring her baby on to the Senate floor to fulfill her obligations.

Her experience has led her to be an excellent advocate for working parents -- including passing legislation to require public spaces like airports to provide space for moms to breastfeed.
