John,

It’s clear -- moving beyond coal is one of the best things we can do for our
planet, our health, and our economy.

A swift transition to clean energy will prevent thousands of premature deaths
from air pollution each year. It will power homes and businesses with
affordable, renewable sources like solar, which already costs less than coal in
many communities. And, it will ensure that we're making real progress against
climate change.

And yet, governments around the world continue to invest in and subsidize
coal, polluting our air and water and worsening the climate crisis.

This week, Mike joined Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President of the
European Commission responsible for the European Green Deal, to call on the
U.S. and EU to lead the world in ending our reliance on coal and moving to a
global clean energy economy.

Will you read their op-ed for CNN and join in the call by sharing with your

Last year -- through a decade of work supporting the Sierra Club's Beyond
Coal campaign -- we hit a major milestone of shutting down 60% of U.S. coal
plants. And we're not slowing down our efforts in 2021.

But coal plants are still being funded and constructed around the world --
often with government support. As Mike and Executive Vice President Timmermans
say in their op-ed, the U.S. and EU must take action to encourage the end of
global coal subsidies, help accelerate the transition to clean energy around
the world, and ensure that public funding isn't footing the bill to keep coal
on life support.

We have to do more than just imagine a world free from outdated fossil fuels
-- we have to step up and call for change. Will you take a moment to read the
op-ed and share?
