No one should be able to buy a gun without completing a background check. But that’s exactly what happened six years ago in Charleston when a 21-year-old white supremacist, Dylann Roof, walked into Emanuel AME Church with a handgun and murdered 9 people in a bible study group. Roof was able to purchase the gun he used because his background investigation was not completed within a three-day window. The completed investigation would have shown his prior offenses — and prevented him from purchasing that gun. The reality is that at gun shows all across this country gun purchases are often exempted from the existing background check law. We’ve come close to changing this before and passing common-sense measures, but the NRA, the gun industry and their allies have blocked us — and they will try again now. Like so much else in the Senate these days, we need either 10 Republican senators to join us or we need to end the filibuster. One way or another, we must get this done. Keep up the grassroots pressure on all fronts! Thank you for staying in this fight, Chris |
