Greetings Ward 8 Residents,

We continued our Public Safety engagement session last night and heard from youth & students on ways to improve safety and in our Ward and throughout the District.

We had a dynamic youth-led conversation where they offered for following solutions (partial list):
* Invest more resources into entrepreneurial programs;
* Create more youth-led initiatives where youth are responsible for managing programs;
* Create a city-wide youth advisory board so that youth across the District build relationships with one another;
* Bring back mentorship programs so that youth have a communication pathway to an adult that is not their parents; and
* Add a stronger police presence on their way to and from school.

This conversation allowed us to hear directly from the youth about their experiences as it related to public safety. If you missed this event, you can watch the recap video here. ([link removed])

Regards,

Trayon White, Sr.

Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White used Johnson's research as a guide when he introduced legislation to remove discrimination to the standard here in the District of Columbia. He named the bill after Stormiyah.

Supporters said the measure aims to change a legal system that continues to devalue Black life, even after death.

The bill currently sits in the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety. WUSA9 has been told that it will likely get another hearing in the Spring.

"I can just tell right now that she's watching us," Holmes said. "She's watching us and praying over us to keep us in a safe space."
