“All of these tech monopolies are going to abuse their power and interfere in our elections, and it has to be stopped,” Donald Trump proclaimed to his supporters just hours before they violently stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.
This dangerous sentiment is one we've heard echoed time and time again from Republicans. They claim Mark Zuckerberg is waging a war on freedom of speech and censoring the “silent majority” right wing. And now, GOP legislators in 12 different states are taking their war on content moderation even further -- they're pushing for bills to be passed that allow individuals to sue social media platforms for “censorship.” These bills would force platforms to allow targeted political misinformation and white-supremacist conspiracy theories to run rampant -- meaning that millions of Americans will be exposed to content that could radicalize them to the alt-right.
Our country can't afford for any more Americans to fall victim to the alt-right pipeline -- we need QAnon, Trump, and everyone else who has played a part in brainwashing so many people into extremism gone from our national discourse -- for good.
Zuckerberg is already only doing the bare minimum. It took YEARS for Facebook to ban dangerous alt-right radicals like Alex Jones, and it took FIVE Americans dying in an insurrection at the Capitol for Facebook to silence Donald Trump. Now more than ever, Democrats need to put an end to the GOP's misinformation efforts.
We need to ENSURE our progressive leaders fighting back across the country against the GOP's misinformation assaults have the support they need right now. If we fail them, our country and our democracy risk falling to the alt-right.
