When Greg Abbott was elected Governor of Texas in 2014, only 28.3% of eligible voters cast a ballot. Republicans like Abbott thrive on low voter turnout -- which is why they work so hard to suppress the vote. Remember when Abbott and his allies enacted a slew of new voting restrictions just last year?

The Texas Tribune reports that Republicans “were aggressive, and largely successful, in shutting down efforts to allow universal mail-in balloting and multiple mail ballot drop-off points,” and “particularly affected were voters of color in places like the Rio Grande Valley.”

It’s clear they’re terrified of losing their grip on power, and for good reason. If every eligible young Latinx voter registered and cast a ballot, Texas would turn blue in no time. Last year, we registered more than a quarter of a million voters in Texas alone. If we can keep up that pace, we will pose a huge threat to Greg Abbott’s re-election in 2022.

After the state’s complete failure to keep the power on during unprecedented cold and the decision of leaders like Ted Cruz to flee during the height of the storm, it’s clearer than ever that change is needed in Texas. The Lone Star State will turn blue sooner or later, and it’s up to us to make sure it’s sooner. But we can’t do it without your support.
