John,
We made history this last election, in so many more ways than one. Now, we have the most diverse Congress our nation has ever seen. And as the first openly gay Afro-Latino elected to Congress, the significance of diverse representation is not lost on me.
Now, as a few of my freshman colleagues and I come together to prioritize racial justice, the importance of diverse representation only becomes clearer.
My greatest passion is public housing — I grew up in it. I was raised in the Bronx by a single mother, and it wasn't easy.
John, the federal government’s neglect of public housing has been ground zero for systemic racism, and the cause for neglect is obvious: many of my colleagues have never had to worry about finding a warm, safe place to rest their head at the end of the day.
That’s why it is so important to have diversity in Congress — to have working-class people in the People’s House. And that’s why I am coming to you today to ask for a $3 donation to fund this grassroots, people-powered campaign. We need 2,500 Democrats who care about diversity in leadership to join us — will you?
And, John, while it’s important to celebrate and protect the progress we’ve made, it’s just as important to remember that far-right extremism and white supremacy are advancing as well.
While the people of the Bronx sent me to Congress, others sent extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene -- MAGA Republicans who actively work against those who look or love like me.
So, our fight continues. And I’m humbly asking you today to join me in the fight. By contributing to my campaign and my friends at Save Democracy today, you’re fueling the frontlines against Republican extremism -- which couldn’t be more important. Please, if you’re able, pitch in whatever you can afford right away. »
