John,
Yesterday after the House passed the Equality Act, I felt a mix of emotions. I am elated that our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters get long-overdue federal protections for education, housing, employment, and more. It is heartening to see that every single Democrat voted for the Equality Act, including the ones from rural districts that are very competitive.
But I’m also furious.
Before the vote, Marjorie Taylor Green cruelly taunted the daughter of a fellow member of Congress and the entire LGBTQ+ community by misgendering her and denying that trans people even exist.
Then, 206 Republicans voted against the bill, making it clear that they are bigots who stand with Marjorie Taylor Greene, not our friends, family, and neighbors who still face discrimination every single day.
I am particularly disgusted with my own representative and former opponent, Elise Stefanik. She supported the bill in 2019 but voted against it yesterday. Stefanik is once again showing us that she will say and do anything to stay in the good graces of the MAGA mob.
It is unconscionable that in 2021, we’re having a “debate” about this when it should have been a unanimous vote.
BACKROADS PAC is putting every rural representative who voted against the Equality Act on notice. Your contributions will allow us to support Democratic challengers, ensuring they have the resources and infrastructure they need to defeat these Republicans. If you have anything to spare, I hope you’ll consider pitching in today.
Thank you for fighting for what’s right.
