We wanted to provide an update on the situation at our country’s Southern border, friend.

Last week, the first group of asylum seekers affected by the Trump administration’s MPP — or “Remain in Mexico” program — entered the United States to wait in safety for their asylum cases to be heard. This is an important step in providing asylum seekers the justice and due process they were denied for the last two years.

We applaud the Biden administration’s work to undo MPP, but the situation for asylum seekers remains precarious. Tens of thousands of people continue to wait in Mexico for their asylum cases to proceed, and they are facing violent crime and economic hardship. Asylum seekers’ lives are at stake right now, and urgent action is required. HIAS is actively working with agencies like UNHCR to help those affected by MPP and facilitate their long-overdue entry into the United States, and we are providing community education services and legal support all along the border to help people better understand the asylum process and advocate for themselves.
