“I thought we decided this last week.” Chances are, you’ve said this to your partner on multiple occasions and it’s caused an argument. This is an example of a logical fallacy, a mistake in reasoning that happens when what you say doesn’t fit the context of the argument. In this example, what you said last week doesn’t really matter because new information comes up and we usually don’t have the right words in the moment. Logical fallacies are commonly used in marital arguments because, well, we’re all human beings who want conversational shortcuts. But they are inherently frustrating because they don’t make sense. Evicting— or at least being aware of — them will lead to fewer arguments over time. |
