The recent Senate trial has made one thing clearer than ever: Republicans cannot be trusted with our democracy.

Now that Mitch McConnell and Republicans are in the minority, they’re desperate to cling to any tool that affords them power and advantage over Democrats — including preserving the outdated filibuster.

Our new Democratic majority provides us an opportunity to pass legislation that aligns with the needs of our nation, challenges the status quo, and levels the playing field for all Americans.

But the filibuster allows Republicans to continue stalling progress on issues like COVID-19 relief and affordable health care by requiring a supermajority of 60 votes — effectively invalidating our majority.

Senate Democrats must block every avenue Republicans have to stand in the way of improving people's lives. Which means they must use their power as the Democratic majority to ensure real, lasting change is on the way by abolishing the filibuster.
