You may be seeing headlines about Ethiopia pop up in your news feed lately. I wanted to reach out to update you on the crisis and share some resources about the conflict and IRC's response. Here's what you need to know »
  • Right now, the country has the second highest number of people who are in need of humanitarian aid, second only to Yemen.

  • In November 2020, a new conflict broke out in the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia, between the federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, sparking ongoing violence and instability.

  • At the same time, Ethiopia has been suffering from the largest locust outbreak in living memory, the effects of climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

John, a staggering 21 million people in Ethiopia are in need of humanitarian aid (to put that into context, that would be every single person in New York state). Eleven million of those people are expected to face crisis levels of food insecurity. As more families face violence at their front doors, our teams in Tigray are anticipating a rapid increase in families being internally displaced, with many fleeing into neighboring Sudan.

It's thanks to your compassionate support that the IRC can be on the front lines in Ethiopia — providing emergency supplies and critical protection services for women and children. We're also distributing cash so people can meet their immediate needs like purchasing food and clean drinking water. And as part of our COVID-19 response, we're continuing to build safe water supply systems and sanitation facilities and to support local partners in running health clinics and schools.

We're also partnering with Sudanese authorities to roll out emergency services in Sudan and meet the urgent needs of incoming refugees.
