United Neighbors didn’t exist in 2020. But in 2021 it will be a key force against legislators like state Sen. Scott Wiener who seek to destroy single-family areas to build dense, market-rate rentals.

Maria Kalban walks us through her step-by-step efforts to unite dozens of homeowner and neighborhood groups, from S.F. Valley, to South L.A., even northward to Sacramento.

Saturday’s teleconference:

  • How Kalban created United Neighbors (+ cool logo), and how you can expand it.
  • Architect Jeff Kalban (yes, her husband) shows slides of your street morphing under SB 9 into 6-unit and 8-unit density (not duplexes, Ezra Klein, your NYT column is wrong).
  • How to send opposition letters to the right committee, right now, in Sacramento.

If you missed our incredible Feb. 6 teleconference, watch this video of Univ. of British Columbia Prof. Patrick Condon, who for years backed upzoning to spur affordable housing. Condon’s new book, Sick City, reveals his change of heart and mind. He tells Vancouver Real Estate podcast:

  • “Everyone thinks zoning is the problem. I was in [that] camp.”
  • “In Vancouver there is no such thing as single-family zoning anymore. We have incrementally quadrupled density … but we haven’t seen any decrease in per square foot housing costs. That evidence is indisputable.”
  • “To summarize: Zoning is not the problem.”

Please join us in this fight against Wiener Inc., by donating now to Livable California.  We are small fry, fighting huge forces.

The worst two bills of 2021 thus far are: SB 9 by Atkins targets 21M people living in homes they own. SB 10 by Wiener lets cities nullify voter-approved land-use protections, so developers can build 10-unit luxury apartments in low-density areas, poor and rich.
