Friend — Over the weekend, 43 Republicans forgot their oaths to protect our country and defend the Constitution.

They failed to convict a president who incited right wing extremists that killed five people and injured hundreds of Americans, including police officers, in an attempt to overturn our legitimate election. Putting party above country, these senators made a political calculation to defend Trump instead of defending America.

*We must not forget them. We must hold them accountable.
*
While ultimately not enough to convict, a clear majority of the Senate which included seven Republican senators — the most votes for a conviction from an opposition party — listened to the will of the American people and should be applauded.

However, Mr. Trump did serious damage to our democratic institutions and attempted to undo our election, the very foundation of our democracy. What’s most distressing is how thoroughly he divided us. He spent the majority of his time spreading dangerous lies, fostering white supremacists, and pitting Americans against one another. That is why we all came together in November and voted in historic numbers to stand against his movement of hatred. So while he may have avoided Senate accountability and found newly-elected enablers in the GOP, the American people have already rendered their collective judgement on Trump.

*We are not as divided as Trump and the GOP want you to believe.
*
We stood united in denouncing the attacks on January 6. And we overwhelmingly agree that any elected leader who violates their oath, spreads disinformation, and incites violence should be deemed unfit and ineligible for office.

Now, we must continue doing the vital work of repairing and rebuilding our country. We can and will get through this pandemic, tackle racial and economic injustice, and address the global threat of climate change, together.

Forward,

Tom

Send a quick thank you to all the senators who voted to do what’s right and convict Mr. Trump for clearly inciting the dangerous, extremist mob on January 6.
