Friends,

Once again, the House stood up and defended the Constitution and our democracy against Donald Trump's abuses. We had to send a message that Trump's insurrection will not be tolerated in our society. And while we were all disappointed in the final vote, there is a growing coalition against Trumpism.

I was in the House chambers during the attack. There is no doubt in my mind that Trump incited the mob. 57 Senators -- Democrats and Republicans -- agreed. The support for conviction was the most bipartisan in impeachment history.

But the 43 Senators who voted to acquit affirmed that their loyalty lies with Trump and that they'll throw away our Constitution to protect their own political ambitions. If they'll excuse the incitement of violence, there's nothing they won't do. History won't remember them fondly.

Trump is a danger to our country; the task before us now is to recognize that our democracy is only as strong as our willingness to uphold it -- and we will rebuild.
