This week, I joined 13 other New York State Senators to call for the emergency powers that were granted to Andrew Cuomo under the COVID-19 pandemic to be revoked.
I’ve been issuing this call for months, because Governor Cuomo has used them as permission to govern unilaterally — he issued 65 executive orders and suspended over 250 laws in the six months after his emergency powers went into effect.
And we recently learned that the Governor’s administration lied about the number of nursing home deaths in New York to avoid investigation by the Department of Justice.
Remember, these deaths happened after Andrew Cuomo mandated nursing homes re-admit COVID-positive patients from hospitals — and then gave nursing home executives legal liability to protect them from being sued for providing insufficient care.
The truth is that Cuomo’s mismanagement of our state contributed to thousands of preventable deaths.
While we can’t go back and prevent this tragic loss of life, we can make sure that Cuomo’s emergency powers are revoked — and our state legislature is granted equal power in decision-making — ASAP. Add your name if you agree:
We need a full investigation into Governor Cuomo’s choice to release nursing home patients from the hospital and re-admit them to nursing homes. We need to know how this contributed to the uncontrolled spread of the pandemic in our state.
