During the first day of Trump's impeachment trial, his lawyer Bruce Castor made the disgraceful argument that Democrats are only impeaching Trump to prevent him from running for office in 2024 -- not because he incited a violent white supremacist mob to storm the Capitol.

But in doing so, he argued, "The people are smart enough... to pick a new administration if they don't like the old one. And they just did."

It's a strange defense for a candidate who vehemently claimed that the election was rigged against him. Trump spent every day between the election and January 6 attacking our electoral system, claiming fraud from voting machines, that dead people voted, and that Republican poll watchers were treated unfairly. In fact, in Trump's infamous speech delivered the day of the insurrection, he said, "They rigged an election, they rigged it like they have never rigged an election before," and "I have been in two elections. I won them both and the second one I won much bigger than the first, okay?" But now that Trump's on trial, his defense is claiming the election was fair and decided by the American people. They're hoping the country will forget for a moment the damage his hateful rhetoric caused. We need to make sure that no one ever forgets that Trump incited the Capitol Insurrection.
