John —
Anti-Semitic and racist conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene don’t deserve the privilege of serving in Congress. Last week, I voted to take away her committee assignments and will continue to push for the expulsion of any members of Congress who call for physical harm to their colleagues.
That being said, Marjorie Taylor Greene is just a symptom of a much larger problem in Congress. Half of all House Republicans gave her a standing ovation in a meeting where she attempted to explain only some of her insane, dangerous statements.
The House Republican Caucus has become so extreme because Congressional districts in this country have become deeply partisan through gerrymandering. When the only competition is a race to the fringe to cater to more partisan primary voters, QAnon views are rewarded and general elections are merely a formality.
Voters deserve real choices in their elections. When Congressional districts are so gerrymandered that there is no real competition, many voters are discouraged from participating. Why should they care if it’s clear the outcome has already been decided?
The next Congressional redistricting is set to occur this year based on 2020 Census data. If we want to ensure that Congressional districts are drawn fairly — and sanely — ahead of the 2022 midterms, we cannot afford to hesitate to enact substantive election reforms.
Thank you for making your voice heard on this critical issue.
Onward,
