Hi friend,
Millions of Americans are carrying the heavy burden of a total of about $1.5 trillion in crushing student debt. The burden is even heavier for many Black households, who make up a larger proportion of those holding student debt.
A new working paper authored by researchers at the Roosevelt Institute casts the cancellation of student debt in terms of racial justice, arguing that if President Joe Biden wielded the power of executive orders to cancel student debt, he would help decrease the racial wealth gap in the U.S.
Biden has expressed support for at least $10,000 per person in immediate student debt cancellation in addition to more substantial relief. Congressional Democrats are pushing him to think bigger and to cancel about 80 percent of the student loan debt run up by 36 million borrowers, many of whom are low-income people of color.
As always, the GOP is dedicated to their pro-billionaire agenda, and they're trying to make sure Biden doesn't relieve millions of Americans of student debt. Our representatives are turning up the heat on Biden to make sure he takes on the student debt crisis. That's why we're asking supporters like you:
Should President Joe Biden cancel student debt?
