John —
Along with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, this week I sent a letter to Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, demanding that DHS immediately halt all ICE deportation flights. ICE is defying President Biden’s 100-day moratorium and unlawfully deporting Black asylum-seekers and immigrants.
During Black History Month and only a couple weeks after tweeting about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ICE has been rounding up Black immigrants and asylum-seekers and deporting them to Haiti, Cameroon, and Ethiopia. ICE is tearing families apart and putting people in life-threatening situations.
One of my constituents was taken in the middle of the night and unlawfully deported to Haiti — a country where he had never been. The United States was the only country he had ever known. His story is not an anomaly.
This sort of cruelty — which was the norm under the Trump administration — was supposed to end with that Presidency. It has clearly not, because ICE is committed to continuing former President Trump’s radical agenda and will continue to do so unless DHS Secretary Mayorkas intervenes.
Under the Trump administration, inflicting cruelty was the goal under any means necessary. The Biden administration must now change course and bring lawfulness and humanity back to our immigration system. Please add your name to demand that Black immigrants and asylum-seekers are no longer targeted and unlawfully deported.
Thank you for making your voice heard on this critical issue. When we say Black Lives Matter, that includes Black immigrant families.
Onward,
