Last month I, along with 231 of my House colleagues, impeached Donald Trump for inciting an attack on the People's House. Tomorrow, the Senate impeachment trial begins.

The attack on January 6 resulted from a months-long disinformation campaign by Trump and his allies, and years of enabling by his inner circle. Despite being in the Capitol that day, some are acting like the insurrection never took place, ignoring its severity, or are too scared to speak out.

And this week, GOP Senators will be both jurors and defendants in Trump's impeachment trial. Yet -- some of Trump's sycophants in Congress are reinforcing that they'll choose him over our democracy again. Folks across the country, including members of Congress, staff, journalists, and essential workers in the Capitol complex, won't ignore what happened. They are still sorting through the trauma that they're carrying from the attack, so we can't just "move on."

The people demand action and accountability.

Trump's words had deadly and traumatizing consequences, and failure to hold him accountable is not an option. It will leave this democracy vulnerable to more threats and send a message to everyone who bears visible and invisible scars from the attack that their experiences aren't valid. For the sake of our democracy and national security, all Senators must put country and leadership above party loyalty.
