John —
A college education opens doors to many good-paying jobs, but over the past few decades, the cost of a college education has skyrocketed while wages have remained stagnant. Now, Americans hold upwards of $1.7 trillion in student loan debt.
Many graduates will need decades to pay off this debt. In my district, thousands of young people have to live with their parents well into middle age because they can’t afford to pay rent or a mortgage.
So many Americans have sought higher education and didn’t come from families with the means to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for tuition upfront. Now they can’t afford to build their futures.
President Biden has already paused student loan payments and the accrual of interest during the pandemic. That’s the right first step — but he must go further.
This is not just an economic issue. This is a racial justice issue, as Black and Hispanic people disproportionately bear the brunt of the student debt crisis.
This is also an LGBTQ+ justice issue. Queer youth disproporationately have higher student debt because many are disowned by their families for daring to live their truth.
We are calling on President Biden to recognize how the student debt crisis overlaps with the many other crises we are enduring. With the stroke of a pen, he can bypass Senate Republicans entirely to liberate an entire generation of young people to meaningfully participate in our economy.
Thank you for making your voice heard. This is an important step in building an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy.
Onward,
