Community-led Response toward an Equitable, Inclusive Recovery

When Seattle Foundation and our partners launched the COVID-19 Response Fund last March, our community came together to ensure our most vulnerable workers and families were looked after. But there is still much more to do. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) have been hit harder by the pandemic, exposing the results of centuries of racial inequities and chronic underinvestment. Building on the COVID-19 Response Fund’s momentum and lessons learned, we are excited to launch a new, pooled fund that will drive investments to BIPOC organizations, movements, and communities. Learn how the Fund for Inclusive Recovery will help lay the groundwork for reinventing our region after this crisis.

2020 Resilience Fund Grants Include Focus on Black-led Organizations
<[link removed]>
Seattle Foundation has awarded $ 555,000 in grants to 30 community-based organizations through our Resilience Fund. The chosen grantees speak to a wide range of issues, including supporting families of color, legal immigration services, and protecting transgender residents of King County. Of the total amount awarded, nearly half will go to support Black-led and Black-serving organizations.

Three years ago, Seattle Foundation launched our first cohort of Engagement Pipeline grantees. As part of the Foundation’s broader Vibrant Democracy Initiative, the Engagement Pipeline grant program supports leadership development within communities to increase their influence. Through their Engagement Pipeline efforts, our grantees have fueled powerful and positive changes in our region.

In Pursuit of Climate Justice

The Environmental Journalists of Color (EJOC) is a transformative network dedicated to advancing the careers of journalists of color who have been historically underrepresented in environmental journalism. In June, Seattle-based media organization Grist convened the EJOC with the aim of bringing critical and fresh perspectives to the field. Grist and the EJOC are among the 13 inspiring grantees that received a total of $ 925,000 in funding as part of Seattle Foundation’s Climate Justice Impact Strategy in 2020.

N2N Spotlight: Haida Roots
<[link removed]>
Haida Roots is a non-profit organization connecting urban Haida Seattleites to their endangered Indigenous language through dance, writing, art, and Haida language classes. Using an N2N grant, the group will further develop their youth development and leadership work. In conjunction with Seattle Public Schools, the organization will create the first-ever Haida online language class.

Seattle Foundation is the recipient of a $ 1 million grant as part of Facebook’s commitment to support Black businesses, creators, and nonprofits. This support from Facebook builds on years of exploration, research, and pilot investments.
Seahawks Players Equality & Justice For All Action Fund Awards $ 500,000 In Grants & Scholarships <[link removed]>
Created in partnership with Seattle Foundation, The Seahawks Players’ Equality & Justice For All Scholarship Fund aims to build a more compassionate and inclusive society by supporting career opportunities for students who have overcome significant adversity.
Child Care Initiative Grants to Support Family Child Care Businesses <[link removed]>
All in WA, a coalition of Washingtonians across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors working to support vulnerable workers and families across the state, has awarded $ 2.8 million in grants to family child care businesses. The grants, part of All in WA’s Child Care Initiative, prioritized child care business owners who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and located in rural and remote areas.
