Responsible U.S. Businesses Demand Full Restoration of EPA’s Safer Choice Program

Dear John,

Safer cleaning products matter to more people every day, but the companies that make and sell them are still in a marketplace dominated by less responsible sellers of products with ingredients that are of concern, are or known to be unsafe. You can help protect consumers with safer cleaning products and defend innovative, responsible companies’ ability to thrive in the marketplace: Demand the EPA fully restore funding for the Safer Choice Program!

For years, American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) has actively supported the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Safer Choice Program because it is a crucial tool to safeguard consumers and help responsible businesses thrive. This common-sense, voluntary program is needed!

Safer Choice allows every business in the supply chain to distinguish their products through a label that acknowledges their safety qualities. Products must be entirely made of ingredients that meet the EPA’s Safer Choice Standard to earn and carry the Safer Choice logo, communicating to consumers that the products are safer for human and environmental health.

Safer Choice has provided America’s responsible businesses an affordable, valuable way to achieve recognition for their products, but over the past four years, substantial cuts have weakened the vitality and crippled the durability of this highly valued, heavily in-demand EPA program.  In 2020, Safer Choice was cut from 13 full-time staff down to only four, following the announcement of an internal agency reorganization. This short-sighted decision hampers America’s best businesses.

EPA must restore the full operating capabilities of this program to meet the needs of America’s consumers, ensure state and local governments can fulfill their responsibility to the public, and defend our nation’s responsible, innovative manufacturers, wholesalers/distributors, retailers and investors in today’s marketplace.

It is important to remember that the EPA Safer Choice program is voluntary, and participating companies’ confidential business information is protected while providing the necessary information to qualify for the Safer Choice label.

Please help restore the Safer Choice program: Sign this letter to join our growing group of businesses and investors in demanding the EPA restore the necessary capacity for the Safer Choice Program to meet today’s responsible business needs.
