Dear ,

As we head into Black History Month, we do so in celebration, honor and tribute to the work of the Black organizers, educators and others who have fought for the liberation of the Black community throughout history. We dedicate this moment to the many who are keeping up the fight, and we do so in full recognition that Black history must be recognized and Black lives made to matter year-round.

We recognize that no single person brings about lasting change; rather, every person’s power adds to that of the community to build toward change. We see that in the movement for Black lives, which continues to push for Black lives to matter not only in tragedy, but every moment of every day.

And we should be clear that Black Lives Matter isn’t a fad — it’s a call to action. It is fundamentally transforming a system that has never allowed for Black equity and Black liberation. Black Lives Matter is policy: It is divesting from police and investing in our communities, providing quality mental healthcare, housing, education, green spaces and public transit, which we know make our communities safer. Black Lives Matter in climate change, in healthcare, in providing housing for all, and in desegregating our schools. Black Lives Matter is a call for justice, and we must respond.

This movement did not just spring into existence; we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, like Marsha P. Johnson, a Black trans woman who helped lead the Stonewall riot for queer liberation, and Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, who represented New York’s 12th district from 1969–1983.

We also want to elevate those who fight for a better future today, the organizers and activists, educators and business-owners, workers and parents of New York City who continue to build community power in ways large and small, so that one day we may say that Black lives are truly liberated. That Black Lives Matter — for REAL.

In Solidarity,

Team Dianne
