It has been less than a month since I was sworn into the 117th Congress, but already my experience is unlike anything I could have imagined. On my fourth day, my colleagues and I were under siege by a mob of white supremacist terrorists, who were incited by then-President Donald Trump.

This week, a journalist at Politico asked me how the historic nature of being the first openly gay Black member of Congress influences my work. I told him that it gives me a lens through which I can see how the policies we debate in Congress impact marginalized communities like the ones to which I belong, and a deep sense of urgency to change the status quo.

I told him that it’s no coincidence I was among the first members of Congress to call for the second impeachment of Donald Trump, having been under attack by a mob of white nationalist terrorists who felt threatened by my very existence. When your very existence is under attack, vague, hypothetical notions of “unity” are not top of mind.

I understood from the outset of the attempted coup that if we failed to hold Donald Trump and his co-conspirators in Congress accountable for their actions, we would find ourselves under attack again. If we fail to bar this twice-impeached ex-President from ever running for office again, the assault on our democracy, on communities of color, and on the LGBTQ+ community will continue.

I will not stop pushing for accountability from all who had a role in the events of January 6th. I am proud to co-sponsor Congresswoman Cori Bush’s resolution to investigate and expel those Members of Congress who incited the insurrection.

We also have other critical work ahead. We must crush the coronavirus pandemic and send much-needed economic relief to working families. We must save the planet from climate catastrophe while creating millions of green jobs. We must deliver health care to everyone.
