Sen. Ron Wyden has had his eye on the Republican dark money machine for a while -- and now, he's officially calling on the IRS to investigate dark money involvement in the insurrection at the Capitol.
Wyden isn't the only one concerned with the insidious power of dark money -- President Joe Biden has promised to introduce a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, the Supreme Court ruling that deemed infinite amounts of dark money as “free speech” in political campaigns.
But President Obama opposed the ruling a decade ago and never succeeded in overturning it despite the fact that the majority of the American people want dark money out of our lives. That's because Republicans NEED dark money and mega-donors on their side -- they know it's the only way they can overrule the will of the American people and continue to push their false narratives and toxic policy aims.
2022 will start before we know it. Special interest groups are already spending money to fight against the Biden-Harris agenda. Everything is on the line: a robust economic and environmental recovery, significant action to empower public health officials and provide pandemic relief, a return to recognizing human rights and the rule of law. All of it is still deeply threatened despite the results of the recent elections.
We're not a massive, right-wing dark money organization. We work with grassroots donations and receive a lot of our gifts in the single-digits. We're proud of that, but it means we need a LOT of “small” gifts to outweigh the few MASSIVE expenditures the GOP is using to drown us out.
