Donald Trump has always billed himself as a wealthy businessman whose financial success meant that he was one of life's “winners” -- and that he was therefore qualified to lead our country. But, as the New York Times reports, he's stepping out of office directly into “a financial minefield.”

His resorts are losing millions of dollars. He has nine-figure loans coming due in the next few years. He has a decade-old IRS audit and is being investigated for tax fraud.

It's tempting to picture Trump losing all his money and power now that he's out of office. But regardless of whether or not he goes broke, the fact is that he and his loyalists defied expectations two election cycles in a row. He and his supporters will likely find a way to brush off his financial woes, and many Americans will still overwhelmingly support the GOP's far-right agenda, especially since, right before leaving the White House, Trump brazenly announced that his MAGA movement is “just the beginning.”

Trump spent his time in office attacking reproductive rights, voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and our access to affordable health care during a global pandemic -- and yet too many people STILL support him, in large part because they admire him for going against “the establishment,” by which they mean our democratic norms.

We must focus on reinforcing the democratic integrity he sought to destroy by restoring the Voting Rights Act, supporting Democrats across the country, and supporting progressive legislation that directly combats the GOP's archaic vision for America. With Trump's financial and governmental clout gone, he's likely to seek power by riling up his dangerous right-wing base.

Now is not the time to look away, but that is exactly what millions of Americans are doing, falsely believing that the work is done. We will need sustained grassroots support to block the GOP's anti-everyone agenda if we have any hope of really restoring our country, but we're already running low on funds.

Our efforts would be impossible without you and all the Democrats who believe a better government is possible.
