It wasn’t easy discussing the loss of my best friend. Looking back, this was the moment that crystallized in my mind that I must step up and lead.
For too long we’ve had leaders who are merely placeholders in Congress, raking in money from their corporate donors and doing their bidding, but remaining complacent through decades of poverty and desperation.
The people of Chicago deserve representatives who will finally stand up and say no, the system is working for those it was designed to serve, but we must create a new system that recognizes the value of each person, and invests in every person, no matter their zip code.
Because the root of our issues isn’t guns. It’s economic and environmental injustice, it’s a prison pipeline that needs constant feeding of people who have potential for greatness, but their lives are considered disposable by an unjust industry cloaking itself as a ‘justice’ system. And I’m here to say no more. Every life has value.
I was inspired to run by my community and I reached out to Brand New Congress candidate Anthony Clark. He was running again in Illinois 7th and our communities were facing similar issues. We’ve been working together ever since. I am proud to join the BNC slate and stand among our future leaders who will come together to support legislation that upholds basic human rights and begins to address the systems that lead to poverty, injustice, environmental crises, and racial injustices.
I know this race will be hard, but I’ve faced tougher obstacles, and so have the people of Illinois’ First District and across the country.
Please stand with me today and support this race and Brand New Congress, not for me, but for the people of this district who can’t wait another week, another month, another election cycle. We have a chance to break down old systems and create ones that work for everyone. I hope you’ll join us. We can’t do this without YOU!
