Today, we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

That quote has been on my mind often over the past few years. America has certainly faced challenges and controversy lately – and I am continually inspired by those who have refused to stand in comfort and convenience.

Advocates and activists have risen up and spoken out in the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy. Citizens take to the streets to fight for the same causes that Dr. King fought for, including civil rights, voting rights, and economic and racial justice. And voters made their way to the ballot box, raising their voices in unprecedented numbers.

I am proud to protect and stand up for those voices in Congress – whether it’s voting to certify the results of a fair and free election or fighting for the needs of my constituents.

Now more than ever, in the midst of challenge and controversy, we need leaders who will take bold steps toward solutions. We must rise to answer the call of history and refuse to be silent in the face of injustice.

I look forward to fighting for you and with you and moving forward the still-unfinished work of bending our great moral arc towards justice.
