Today we honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and now that I’m a member of Congress, I’m more committed than ever to helping create the world for which he fought.

People in power like to pretend that Dr. King’s advocacy was only about equal treatment under the law, and that his goals have already been realized. Neither of those things are true.

We don’t yet live in a nation where Black and brown people are not “judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

In today’s political climate, Dr. King would be dismissed by many as a “radical liberal.”

He called for a significant expansion of the social safety net, including a guaranteed basic income, guaranteed housing for all, and guaranteed high-quality education. More than 50 years after his death, these ideas are still considered controversial.

Dr. King didn’t let his detractors deter him in his fight for economic and social justice, and neither will we. Together we will pass a living wage, Medicare for All, and a Green New Deal.

Together we will create the America of Dr. King’s dreams — all of his dreams, not just the ones people in power find palatable.

Onward,
Mondaire
