Last week, all of Donald Trump's worst impulses came to a head, as he set a violent, terrorist mob loose on our nation's Capitol in an attempt to deny the will of the people.

The entire world watched the chaos that followed, as the rioters vandalized public spaces, looted offices, and - worst of all - prowled the building, threatening elected officials' lives.

Today, the House of Representatives took up impeachment against Donald Trump for his role in inciting an insurrection against the United States of America.

I supported that Article of Impeachment. First thing this morning, as Chair of the House Rules Committee, I started the impeachment discussion on the House floor, where just a week ago I ran for my life when Trump-inspired domestic terrorists stormed the Capitol . We're in unprecedented times, from the invasion of the Capitol to a president being impeached twice, and our choices will define our values for the future.

Make no mistake: Donald Trump can't remain in office. His entire political career - from racist birtherism to seditious violence - has divided our country and threatened our security. Now, people are dead because Trump demanded that they value his lies over their lives.

Future generations will learn that January 6 was the day an American president urged extremists to overthrow our government. We must make sure they also learn that our nation held him accountable.

Jim
