A week ago today, Trump incited a deadly attack on the Capitol. Today, the House will be voting to impeach him.
As more details about the attempted coup are revealed, the more it becomes clear just how perilous the situation was. Representatives and their aides were, in some cases, moments away from being in the mob's reach. Someone erected gallows and the crowd chanted "Hang Mike Pence." People brought guns, weapons of all sorts, and planted numerous homemade bombs.
We cannot allow insincere calls for unity to stop us from holding Trump accountable.
Let us be clear: Trump should be removed from office immediately. But impeachment and conviction in the Senate do more than getting him out of office. It also prevents him from running office again and removes perks, such as a lifetime pension, an annual stipend for travel, and a lifetime of secret security detail.
