Hi John,

Governor Andrew Cuomo is in the middle of his week-long State of the State addresses outlining his priorities for the coming year. But the Governor has already made it clear with his actions that those priorities do not include public education.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Governor Cuomo’s rolling budget cuts have hurt children by compounding existing poverty, hunger, and housing insecurity. New York's students need the state to invest in public education — from child care to Pre-K to grade 12 — to ensure all students across the state, especially Black, Latinx, immigrant and low income children receive a high quality education.

Today, as lawmakers in Albany gear up to negotiate the budget for next year, we launch our statewide campaign to make sure they pass a budget that taxes billionaires and fully funds our schools.

Action #1 | Call New York State's Elected Leaders

Use the script below to call your state leaders, and when you're done, please encourage family and friends to make a call too.

Governor Andrew Cuomo: (518) 474-8390

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins:  (518) 455-2585

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie: (518) 455-3791

 Call Script

Hi, I am ______, from (City/District.) I am calling because we need to protect students, not billionaires.

Our schools have been struggling to meet the needs of our students in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to lack of additional funding in 2020, our districts have had to lay off hundreds of educators and social workers.

Gov. Cuomo has an obligation to New York State students, and we demand that he and our legislatures our children and their education by taxing the ultra rich in New York State and funding our schools. Stop protecting billionaires and invest in our students.

Action #2 | Post a Picture of Learning During COVID

The pandemic has fundamentally altered the day-to-day of classrooms and learning for students, teachers and parents. Take a picture of your child or students engaged in learning (whether remote or in person).

Then post your photo on your social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter) to send a message to Governor Cuomo about why it’s important to fund our public schools.

Remember to use the hashtag #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires!

Today, @NYGovCuomo will give his State of the State address, but we are here today to share the reality for New York parents. We are here to share our State of New York Parents address for 2021.https://bit.ly/ParentSOS21  #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires

Parents across NYS from Buffalo to LI are struggling with the growing crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Resources are scarce, and opportunities are dwindling. It’s time for @NYGovCuomo to protect our students. #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires

Thanks to @SenSchumer, NYS is expected to receive nearly $4 billion for K-12 education. But, $4B is not enough. In order to provide the educational opportunities our students need, we must raise taxes on the ultra wealthy. #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires

Education is a human right. @NYGovCuomo has a moral obligation to invest in our children and raise taxes on the ultra wealthy. It’s time to  #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires this budget season.

As a result of @NYGovCuomo educational neglect, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the widespread inequity that has plagued NY schools for decades. NYS has consistently ranked 49th in the nation in education equity. #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires

Education budgets have been slashed, teachers are being laid off & students are left out in the cold - while billionaires have seen their net worth increase by half a trillion dollars. It’s time to tax the ultra wealthy. #ProtectStudentsNotBillionaires
