John —

Last week’s attempted coup will go down as one of the darkest moments in modern American history.

As we learn more about what transpired, it has become clear that the violent insurrectionists were dangerously close to mass-murdering elected officials.

We must do whatever we can to ensure that an event like last week’s attempted coup is never allowed to happen again. Here are the key steps Congress must take in order to prevent recent history from repeating itself:

  1. President Trump must be impeached and removed from office as soon as possible. If Vice President Pence and the cabinet had a spine, they would have already started the process to remove him by invoking the 25th Amendment. Since that hasn’t happened, Congress must do its duty before Trump has the chance to do any more damage to our country.
  2. All of Trump’s co-conspirators in the House and Senate must be expelled from Congress. A significant faction of Congressional Republicans abetted the President in inciting an armed insurrection. They are co-conspirators in sedition, pose grave danger to their colleagues, and do not deserve the privilege of serving in Congress.
  3. We must investigate the white supremacist infiltration of the Capitol Police. No amount of heroic work that some Capitol Police officers did to hold the line could have overcome the damage done by other officers letting armed domestic terrorists waltz right into the Capitol to carry out violent mayhem. That was no accident. No one is safe in the Capitol until we understand the extent of white supremacist infiltration of federal law enforcement and enact a plan to root it out. That’s why I’ve co-sponsored Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s legislation to do precisely that.

It is beyond the pale that some of my colleagues think we should simply move on from this without any sanctions on our lawless President or his enablers in Congress or law enforcement. To do nothing would be to encourage future violence.

We must have the courage to look traitors in the eye.

Onward,
Mondaire
