Nevertheless, our democracy persists.

Friend –

Let's be clear: What we witnessed this week were not protests – we know protests.

It was the logical conclusion of the Trump presidency, and everything he has stood for, and spoken about, on full display. Every time we thought he could not go lower, he found a way, and tried to drag the country with him.

This was not civil disobedience. These were acts of domestic terrorism meant to overthrow a democratic election that rejected Donald Trump, after record voter turnout.

Before these shameful events unfolded, we witnessed the inspiring conclusion of the power of organizing, and getting out the vote – led by Black voters and organizers in Georgia. That is real democracy. It is precisely why our democracy persists.

There is a lot to take in from what has happened this week. It is a lot to take in. Like you, we are having a hard time keeping up.

So, let’s each do what we can to take care of ourselves and each other, and keep strong for the work ahead.

Sincerely,

Abdi Soltani

Executive Director, ACLU of Northern California
