This Week: At A Glance

Democrats flip the Senate:

Tuesday, Winning For Women’s endorsed candidate Senator Kelly Loeffler lost her Senate race to Reverend Raphael Warnock. Shortly after, Senator David Perdue lost to Democrat candidate Jon Ossoff. Democrats won control of the U.S. Senate after a net gain of three seats this cycle. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be the tie-breaker in a Senate made up of 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans.

Congress Confirms Biden:

Vice President Pence joined Members of Congress to certify the election of President-elect Biden, just hours after the protesters were removed from Capitol property. View the confirmation here.

Former president George W. Bush condemned the violence.

New Congress:

A record number of women — and women of color — were sworn into the 117th Congress over the weekend. The new Congress includes 144 women, 37 of whom are Republican.

CNN: Republican women in the House could change everything.  On January 3, members of the 117th Congress raised their hands and swore their oaths and a significant shift will take place.

The Hill: Loeffler says she won't object to Georgia results. Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) said on Wednesday that she is dropping her plan to object to the Electoral College results from Georgia in the wake of rioters breaking into the Capitol.

Politico: Hill chaos turns deadly after rioters storm Capitol. "What happened here today was an insurrection, incited by the President of the United States," said one GOP senator.

The New York Times: Congress confirms Biden’s election, hours after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol. Congress formally confirmed President-elect Joe Biden's election win early Thursday following the storming of the Capitol by a violent mob of President Donald Trump's supporters.

NPR: Some Republican Senators Walk Back Objections To Election Results. Headed into Wednesday's Electoral College counting process, 14 Republican senators had said they planned to object to at least one state's results. But that number dwindled after a mob overtook the U.S. Capitol building Wednesday afternoon.

Fox News: Rep.-elect Young Kim brings empathetic approach to immigration: I have 'gone through the process'. California Republican backs family-based immigration that allowed her to become a U.S. citizen.

Roll Call: Joe Manchin kills dreams of expanding Supreme Court, eliminating the filibuster.  Democrats have a shot at Senate control, with vice president breaking ties.
