Schools Must Spend Less

What to Know: One state lawmaker’s top goal for the upcoming legislative session is “to make sure there aren’t any cuts ([link removed] ?) ” to public education funding. The bid to keep school spending elevated comes in spite of an 8.1% unemployment rate ([link removed] ) , mass business closures ([link removed] ) , and long lines at Texas food banks ([link removed] ) .

The TPPF Take: Every Texas family has had to adjust their spending habits. Now it’s time for public schools to do the same.

“Public schools must spend less. Texas taxpayers cannot afford otherwise,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “State lawmakers have a responsibility to bring school spending in line with today’s economic realities and better protect those who’ve been hard-hit by the pandemic, especially the elderly and the low-income.”

Better than Prozac

What to Know: Giving families more choices in education leads to better education outcomes ([link removed] ) —and even better mental health for students, a new study shows.

The TPPF Take: School closures and lingering uncertainty about whether they’ll remain open has led to spikes in mental health issues for many students.

“But there’s much we can do now to help our kids to brighter futures,” says TPPF’s Emily Sass. “It begins by recognizing that schools aren’t ‘super-spreaders.’ It’s vital to ensure that schools are open and stay open, safely, so students who are ready can access instruction. Next, we should allow remote learning for those students who prefer it. We must give families more choices, not fewer.”

Immigration Reform

What to Know: Progressives in Congress are already pushing President-elect Joe Biden on immigration. ([link removed] )

The TPPF Take: Immigration reform is a necessity; polarization is impeding it.

“The labels ‘against immigration’ and ‘open borders’ are regularly hurled by partisans who seek to demonize their opponents,” says TPPF’s Ken Oliver. “In addition to their inaccuracy in just about every instance, such smears hinder the ability of our leaders to reach solutions to the vexing issues of border security and immigration policy.”
