John --

Announcement: We are proud to introduce you to Michael Owens, Robert Emmons Jr. and Anthony Clark. These future representatives have close ties to their districts, and have worked for years to create change. Now they are taking their fights for economic, social and racial justice and equality to Capitol Hill.

BNC is more than an endorsing agency or a rubber stamp, our candidates are a part of a community. They come together to discuss policy, share campaign ideas, and rally behind each other to help build strong campaigns. All three candidates we featured today are up against entrenched incumbents.

The Illinois and Georgia primaries are less than 6 months away!

Can you contribute today to help build a more dynamic and effective Congress by helping BNC support candidates like Robert, Michael and Anthony?

Michael Owens, Georgia 13th

Dr. Michael C. Owens is a third-generation veteran, a father, and a progressive Democrat running for Congress in Georgia’s 13th District. Michael served eight years in the Marines Corp on active and reserve duty. Following his tour of duty, Michael completed his education and is now an accomplished senior-level business leader and executive. He has guided some of the world’s largest companies in how to address privacy, cybersecurity and technology issues.

Michael has represented his community in Atlanta for the past seven years, serving on the Georgia Advisory Committee with the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. Since 2016, during his tenure as Chair of the Cobb County Democratic party, the county party has grown to be one of the largest in the state. Michael has led the party to several unlikely victories, including flipping a total of six seats in a historically red county in Atlanta. His efforts also garnered national attention as Cobb County gained a majority of Democrats in the 2018 election.

Michael’s ties to his community and hard work have resulted in a groundswell of support for his campaign. His experience in cyber security and knowledge of foreign affairs bring unique perspectives to the Brand New Congress slate!

Robert Emmons Jr., Illinois 1st District

Robert Emmons Jr. has deep ties to his community, serving as a social innovator and non-profit leader. Over the past several years, Robert has been involved in the Chicago community tackling issues such as gun violence and income inequality.

Robert was a Community Leader Consultant for the Obama Foundation and Generation Progress, helping young people take action against pressing issues in their communities. In addition, he has worked with the Unleash Innovation Lab, focusing on crafting creative and effective ways to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Robert rededicated his life to ending everyday gun violence following the death of his best friend in 2015. He started working as the Manager of Program Innovation for OneGoal, an organization that helped both Robert and his friend get into college. Robert felt his lived experiences could make the model even stronger.

Robert understands that climate change and environmental degradation affects marginalized communities the most. His platform reflects a holistic approach to systemic poverty, systemic racism and economic justice by prioritizing gun reform, healthcare, and economic development in underserved communities. Robert understands that to solve the problems of greatest concern to the constituents of the Illinois’ 1st District, he must look at the intersectionality of issues.

Anthony Clark, Illinois 7th

Anthony Clark is a high-school teacher, and a fierce, empathetic community leader who built up two non-profit organizations focused on community outreach in Chicago. Anthony is exactly the kind of representative we need in a Brand New Congress.

In 2018 Brand New Congress asked Anthony to run; and he hit the trail, challenging incumbent Danny Davis for Illinois’ 7th district. Davis has held his seat for 22 years, yet the district’s poverty rate has only gotten worse. Inequities in the criminal justice system aren’t improving. Davis claims to be a progressive but when it comes time to legislate, Davis sides with his wealthy donors. It’s time for a change in Illinois’ 7th, and we know Anthony is the right choice for change.

Anthony Clark is inspired by not only his community but his students and is driven to run in hopes of passing legislation that changes the course for those who have been overlooked by failed representation.
