If Democrats lose the Senate runoffs in Georgia tomorrow, we won’t just lose our chance to take back the Senate, but Joe Biden will lose his chance to reshape the courts.

As POLITICO reports, “Should Senate Republicans win the fight to keep their majority, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will have unilateral authority to stifle Biden’s picks to the federal judiciary, weakening Democrats’ hopes to make up for four years of confirming conservative judges and two years of a McConnell blockade during President Barack Obama’s final years.”

Throughout just one term, Donald Trump transformed our judiciary, filling federal courts with staunch conservative loyalists who’ve already started reshaping our laws on everything from gun control to voting rights to immigration.

Now, Joe Biden has a chance to reform that legacy and fill 59 vacancies to the federal judiciary and potentially more, including a Supreme Court retirement seat, as POLITICO further reports that “judges have also delayed retirement, with the hope of a Democratic president taking office.”

That is, unless McConnell keeps the Senate. We know you’re tired of seeing all the possible ways Trump and the GOP can still keep their far-right agenda in power -- we are too. But the fact is that if we don’t act now to win in Georgia and stand against McConnell, then we won’t be able to rebuild a democratic judicial bench -- and we don’t have the funds we need right now to win this fight.

 

There’s no doubt about it, Joe Biden can transform our judiciary and nominate judges who not only represent our values but who will place justice above the musings of any one man or political party -- and we all need to do our part to ensure he has the chance to do so.
