Week of January 4th, 2020

Comrades,

We are living through difficult times. As we suffer through multiple, ongoing crises, we - the members of the multiracial working class - find ourselves slowly crushed by the greed of the capitalist class, and further oppressed by racism and the patriarchy.

We do not all always fight the same battles, and sometimes our differences threaten to turn us against each other, but our enemy is the same: Neoliberal capitalism, an economic system that promotes profit over human life and dignity.

This system cannot be reformed. It needs to be torn out at the roots.

In order to do this, DSA must continue to seriously organize the masses; the alienated and oppressed; our coworkers; our neighbors; ourselves. Our only hope lies in solidarity--in inviting people to join us in becoming agents of our own liberation.

This liberation is NOT a guaranteed outcome of our hope and anger. It is not a guaranteed outcome of just any type of activity. We cannot afford to be dogmatic, and must carefully assess our unique circumstances in this moment, including a likely battle against neoliberal austerity under Biden, a pandemic that is still not being easily solved by available vaccines, an eviction crisis, and the ongoing racialized menace of the carceral state.

The challenges facing us this year are no less than what we have been struggling and coping with. Against this, however, stands hopeful trends in union organizing drives, and the continued growth of DSA--with 5,000 members in LA alone--and dozens of nationally elected officials. Not only are we building power, but we are also beginning to exert this power against the ruling elite.

In DSA-LA, as we look at this terrain and assess our strategy for 2021 and beyond, we make this commitment to you at the start of the new year: Although we may find ourselves at odds from time to time, we will not mistake our comrades for enemies. Our enemy is the capitalist class and an economic order bigger than any sect of us could ever defeat. We commit to work together to build on the tireless labor of all the organizers who have come before us in order to continue allowing DSA Los Angeles to grow into the organization which we must become in order to defeat capitalism.

  • In 2021 we will implement the priority resolutions mandated by our members.
  • We will meet with organizers from all chapter committees and campaigns in order to promote better internal communication.
  • This month, we will develop and publish a workplan describing our shared vision for the chapter, including key dates for important chapter events.
  • We will also work to develop more written policy to make sure every member understands how the chapter works internally, and how they can participate.

It will take a vibrant, liberatory organization to defeat capitalism. In 2021, and beyond, we will continue to make the organization more accessible to all who wish to join us.

Our enemies are strong, but the working class is stronger. Together, we will overcome.

In solidarity,
